ChatGPT Ads

OpenAI opened self-serve advertising in ChatGPT on 22 July 2026. No minimum spend, CPC and CPM buying, and targeting based on the context of the conversation. It is genuinely new, and that is exactly why it is worth being early.

What Changed

OpenAI began testing ads in February 2026 on the free and Go tiers in the US. The US$50,000 minimum spend came off in May. On 22 July the self-serve Ads Manager opened to everyone, with no minimum. Paid ChatGPT tiers stay ad-free, so this reaches the free-tier audience only. Early advertisers included Best Buy, Lowe's and VistaPrint.

Why It Is Different

Conversation Context, Not Keywords

Targeting reads the intent of the conversation rather than matching a search string. Closer to understanding why someone is asking than to bidding on what they typed.

Low Competition, For Now

Auctions are only as expensive as the advertisers in them. Being in early, while most brands are still deciding whether this is real, is the whole opportunity. It will not stay cheap.

It Pairs With AI SEO

Paid placement puts you in the conversation. Being citable in AI answers keeps you there when the ad stops running. The two jobs are related, and we run them together.

How We Approach It

Honestly: this placement is weeks old, so nobody has a long track record on it, and you should be sceptical of anyone claiming otherwise. What we bring is the same discipline we apply everywhere else. Start small, measure properly before scaling, keep it tied to a real conversion rather than a vanity metric, and stop quickly if it is not working.

We will tell you if we do not think it suits your brand yet. Plenty of businesses are better served putting that budget into search or into the AI SEO foundations first.
